PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL JOURNEY
As a child born in Africa, I dreamt of becoming a Global Executive, Wall Street banker, of sailing and flying, and of serving my community. Fast forward 20 years later and I am doing it all and more. A few lessons to take away: Your present circumstances should not determine your future.
Dare to dream big. Never let anyone tell you what you can't do. Let no one downplay your aspirations. Each of us has a unique contribution to make to this world. Share your uniqueness. My Hero Nelson Mandela said, “A winner is a dreamer who never gives up”. Dream big, enjoy the journey and the company.
Combine knowledge with wisdom, surround yourself with good people, learn from them. Life is complicated and is not fair, but it is a miracle and it is worth living. A proverb in Africa states that it takes a village to raise a child, meaning that a whole community of people contributes to the growth of one individual
Aspire to be a person of value and impact, not just a person who wants to make a living. You are being watched, pave the way for others, pay it forward, and be a role model for someone else. Life is too short to race through it, going nowhere. You should ask yourself how you are living your life? It’s all about HOW. Leave a positive legacy. Sydney Poitier is my favorite actor and humanitarian, the first black person to win an academy award for best actor in Lilies of the Field (1963). I am always flattered when people tell me I look like Sydney Poitier. One of his memorable quotes dear to me” To simply wake up every morning a better person than when I went to bed”. Aspire to become a better person.
Develop a good habits, good work ethic, and be resilient. Life will present you with problems. It is not a matter of IF, but WHEN problems will arise in your life. Prepare yourself for it. Through the habits you develop, the values you possess, and the relationships you form with your friends, family, and community, you will be able to overcome obstacles
Be kind but fair to people. We need strong, decisive leaders who are KIND and COMPASSIONATE. Don’t be afraid to show kindness to others. You should treat others as you would like to be treated. By doing so, you will shine a light on this world. Shine like a star, be the light.
